A number of fire retardant compositions have been investigated and patented since the early 1970s when the addition of flame retardants to plastics, electrical equipment, and synthetic fibers became more common. Halogenated hexachlorocyclopentadiene-styrene adducts have been patented for the fire proofing of plastcis and polyesters, but their detection in environmental samples has only recently been reported. For instance, the presence of Dechlorane 604 has been cited in a series of scientific publications, but a structurally related compound, hexachlorocyclopentadiene-tribromostyrener also known as Dechlorane 604 Component B, may be present at even higher levels. In order to aid researchers in the identification and qualification of these compounds, Wellington Laboratories has synthesised Dechlorane 604 Component B.

Halogenated Flame Retardants & Related Compounds
There are many challenges associated with the chemistry, toxicology and environmental analysis of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) as well as other chlorinated and nonhalogenated compounds used solely as flame retardants (FRs), or in mixtures with BFRs.
This area of research is continuing to grow as additional FRs are being found in the environment and certain BFRs are being phased out and replaced with new compounds. The scientists at Wellington monitor the literature for reports of these newly detected contaminants and new commercial flame retardants so that we can provide the necessary reference standards.

In an effort to satisfy our customers, a number of specialty solution/mixtures of native and mass-labelled PCDDs and PCDFs have been prepared.
These include multi-point calibration sets (with up to 13 points) which allow analysts to customize their GC/MS calibrations depending on anticipated contaminant levels.
Wellington has also prepared several other calibration sets containing native and mass-labelld chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) an chlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs). Some of these have become quite popular as they are multi-point sets including as many as 13 individual calibration solutions.
This allows some flexibility in selecting the calibration range.
All of these calibration sets and support solutions are suitable for use with the Japanese Industrial Standards JIS K 0311 and JIS K 0312. In addition, provided that all performance criteria are achieved, they can be used with other regulatory methods from other countries.
In our previous catalogue, we introduced DFP-CVS-B10 which is a combination calibration set for PCDD, PCDF and dioxin-like PCB congener analysis. These solutions remain very popular and will continue to be offered.
In addition, these calibration sets and their support solutions incorporate additional mass-labelled PCDDs and PCDFs which can be used as part of a more involved sampling and sample processing regime.

The practice of analyzing for marker PCBs (congeners that are most prevalent in technical mixtures) and WHO PCBs (congeners that exhibit “dioxin-like” toxicological activity) has become routine practice in analytical laboratories. Congener specific analyses are also very important since commercial PCBs can vary in composition on a lot to lot basis and can change once they age in the environment.
Wellington offers method sets, which include calibration kits and support solutions, for the GCMS analysis of PCBs by the following methods:
The electrophilic chlorination of biphenyl leads to complex mixtures of chlorobiphenyl (PCB) congeners ranging from monochloro- up to decachloro-biphenyl. Although 209 PCB congeners are theoretically possible, only about 150 are found in industrial mixtures and have ended up in the environment.
Certain PCB congeners are considered more toxic than others and are termed ‘dioxin-like’. For this reason there are analytical methods that target only these ‘dioxin-like’ PCBs, while other methods focus on the major PCB congeners in the industrial mixtures. In addition, there are methods that address both groups of PCB congeners.
Wellington has designed, prepared, and offers a number of sets of calibration kits and support solutions for the analysis of individual PCB congeners.
WP-CVS
This set of solutions is to be used for the analysis of the 12 dioxin-like PCB congeners by HRGC/HRMS.
EPA Method 1668C
This series of calibration solutions, and corresponding support solutions, were prepared to be used according to U.S. EPA Method 1668, Revision C.
EPA Method 1668
This calibration kit and support solutions were designed and prepared to be used with the Draft version (March, 1997) of U.S. EPA Method 1668 which is still popular with some laboratories.
EC-9605-CVS
Environment Canada Method 1/RM/31 is a HRGC/LRMS method for PCB analysis and these solutions were prepared to be used with this method.
P48-W-CVS and P48-M-CVS
European Standard Method EN 1948-4 is to be used for analysis of the 12 ‘dioxin-like’ PCB congeners and the 6 ‘marker’ PCB congeners in stationary source emissions. These two calibration kits, and their support solutions, were prepared for this method.
WM48-CVS
This calibration set is a combination of P48-W-CVS and P48-M-CVS.

All compounds are synthesized using one-product unambiguous routes and their chemical and isotopic purities were confirmed using multiple techniques. Structural characterization was verified by HRGC/LRMS co-injection of the mass-labelled PCB with its native analogue.
Wellington has prepared a very comprehensive collection of fully labelled (13C12) individual PCB congeners including the 12 ‘dioxin-like’ PCBs and the more prominent congeners found in commercial mixtures and the environment.
All of the 13C-PCBs in the following pages were prepared using one-product, unambiguous routes and purified using a variety of methods. Their structures and chemical and isotopic purities were confirmed using various instruments and this data is included in the Certificates of Analysis

These solutions include multi-point calibration sets which can be used for the analysis of the 12 WHO (“dioxin-like”) PCBs as well as PCBs-170 and -180, which have been assigned provisional toxic equivalency factors (TEFs). A much more involved set of solutions containing 82 native PCB congeners, including all of the WHO PCBs, is also available. The PCB congeners in these solutions were selected based on their presence in, and contribution to, the AroclorTM commercial mixtures.
PCB-CVS-A10 and PCB-CVS-B10, and their support solutions, were designed and prepared to be used to satisfy the requirements of the Japanese Industrial Standards JIS K 0311:2005 and JIS K 0312:2005. PRODUCT DISCONTINUED
P44DMHxS
Unfortunately, P44DMHxS (a mixture of perfluoro-4-4-dimethylhexane sulfonate and perfluoro-4-4-dimethylhexanoic acid) is being discontinued due to limited interest and a lack of inventory. However, these compounds are identified as minor components in our br-PFOSK/T-PFOS and T-PFOA reference standards respectively. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.
