Introducing Sulfur Certified Reference Materials

Paragon Scientific can now manufacture premium level, dual accredited Certified
Reference Materials (CRMs) for Sulfur analysis, certified in strict accordance with
both ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO/IEC 17034 as per their accreditation to the United
Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

Paragon Scientific's Sulfur Certified Reference Materials

Paragon Scientific’s Sulfur CRMs are suitable for calibration, verification or for use in quality control procedures used for analysing sulfur content in petroleum products. Our opening range includes sulfur in
light mineral oil, heavy mineral oil, and in synthetic diesel, with sulfur content ranging from 0 (Blank) through to 5.0000 % (50000 ppm) for each material. More matrices are to be launched in the near future, including
sulfur in kerosene, iso-octane and more.

Each Sulfur CRM provides traceability of measurement to recognised national standards, and to units of measurement realised at the National Physics Laboratory (NPL) or other recognised national standards
laboratories. All sulfur content values are traceable to National Institute Standards and Technology (NIST), and each CRM provides low levels of uncertainty, ensuring maximum accuracy of data at hand.

Paragon Scientific’s Sulfur CRMs are available in 100 mL volume glass containers with tamper-evident packaging, providing assurance of sample integrity. Paragon also offers set sulfur kits for each matrix and
the appropriate test methods associated, providing easy and efficient procurement solutions for end-users.

Background

Petroleum, or crude oil, is a valuable commodity because it is the feedstock for a wide range of products from fuels to plastics. Sulfur and its organic compounds are impurities found in crude oil, petroleum products
and feedstock. The sulfur levels in these products vary from the highest amounts in the crude oils to trace levels in road fuels.

Sulfur oxides formed during the combustion of gasolines or diesel fuels in internal combustion engines are damaging to the engine and to the environment. In the atmosphere, sulfur oxides convert to sulfuric acid by
reaction with moisture, and harm vegetation, aquatic, animal and human life. Consequently, ultralow sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel sold in North America must contain less than 15 ppm sulfur. The sulfur content limit in
Europe is even lower, at 10 ppm. Similar sulfur content limits are being adopted by other parts of the world to reduce air pollution and other environmental impacts.

Quantitative analysis of sulfur in crude oil, petroleum products and feedstock is extremely important to ensure compliance with regulatory bodies and legislation, failure to do so can result in costly fines. Analysis
techniques for sulfur content measurement include wet chemistry, X-ray fluorescence, atomic spectroscopy and various thermal combustion methods with different detection limits. Regardless of the technique
employed for measurement, robust analytical data is paramount, calibration and / or verification. The use of high quality CRMs certified to ISO 17025 and ISO 17034 is critical to ensuring confidence of the
measurement results achieved.

For more information about UKAS and to view our scope of accreditation (Calibration Laboratory number 0649) please visit www.ukas.org/calibration

What is ISO 17025?
ISO 17025 is a recognised international standard that specifies the requirements for the competence to carry out testing and or calibrations to a standard dictated by international methods. The international standard requires that an accredited facility comply with all the requirements detailed within the varied sections of the standard. These sections range from assuring the quality of test and calibration results to accommodation, environmental conditions, and purchasing. ISO17025 is applicable to laboratories that operate in a multitude of business sectors, some of which include automotive, cosmetics, micro-electronics, petro-chemical, pharmaceutical and power generation.

What is ISO Guide 34?
ISO Guide 34 provides the highest level of Quality Assurance, confirming the expertise of the manufacturer, the integrity of the production systems and the reliability of the Certified Reference Materials that it produces.

•    Outstanding reproducibility maintained during temperature cycling

•    Highest operating temperature available
•    Save time and improve analysis workflow

Until now, headspace syringes had the potential to perform poorly when used at high temperatures. Common problems experienced with headspace analyses due to poor syringe performance include: syringe plunger tips failing; leaking syringes; needles detaching; additional sample flushing required due to high syringe carryover; and worst of all, poor reproducibility of results.

Diamond Headspace Syringes -  the new standard in headspace syringes overcomes these problems.

Headspace

The unique energized plunger tip design ensures a gas tight seal is consistently maintained providing the lowest syringe carryover and outstanding reproducibility.

Diamond Headspace syringes have the highest operating temperature, maintain performance up to 150 °C and continue to perform with temperature cycling resulting in increased headspace syringe lifetime.

SGE syringes have consistently been the choice of GC and LC equipment manufacturers for many years. They choose our products because their reputation depends on the performance of our components.

Our knowledge and expertise in liquid handling technologies has enabled us to design syringes for a vast variety of applications. However, all these products have two things in common; outstanding performance and superior quality.

Why filter your samples for HPLC?

• To protect the HPLC column, the column inlet frits and capillary columns against blockage (plugging) caused by particulate matter in the sample
• To protect injection valves from damage caused by scratching and wear of the valves internal components, caused by harmful particulate matter in the unfiltered sample, thereby reducing instrument downtime.

About our Quality Control procedures

• Every batch of filters is tested by an independent laboratory to ISO 17025 quality procedures

• Every individual Q-Fil Certified Syringe Filter is visually inspected to ensure it meets our manufacturing and quality control specifications
• Samples of all our syringe filters and their respective raw technical data are stored for a period of 5 years from the date of manufacture for future reference
• Each batch of filters is tested prior to release for
- External Dimensions
- Bubble Point
- Burst Pressure
- Filter Integrity
- Water Flow Rate
- UV Extractables and compliance with all technical procedures

Why use Greyhound Q-Fil Certified Syringe Filters?

• Q-Fil Certified Syringe Filters are manufactured in compliance with ISO 9001:2000 quality procedures

• Every box is supplied with a Certificate of Analysis and Conformance to guarantee its batch to batch quality and performance

Selecting the right Q-Fil Certified Syringe Filter

• Choose the size of filter based on the volume of sample to be filtered

• Choose the filters porosity based on the size of the potential particulates in the sample. It is important to be aware that the finer the porosity of the membrane the greater the pressure will be required to pass the sample through the filter. A sample containing large quantities of particulates is best filtered using a filter with a built-in glass fibre pre-filter
• Choose the type of membrane based on the solvent being filtered.

Filter Sizes

All our filters have female Luer Lock inlets and are available in three diameters -

25mm Diameter
Designed for large sample volumes or solvent filtration

Pore Sizes

Q-Fil Certified Syringe Filters are available in 0.20µm and 0.45µm pore sizes. The 0.20µm filters remove the smallest particulates whilst the 0.45µm filters are designed to remove particulates which would be detrimental to most analytical columns.

Pre-filters (page 6) have a glass microfibre membrane which is chemically inert and resists most solvents. Q-Fil glass microfibre pre-filters are recommended for removing large particulates from the sample and are ideal for dissolution tests.

Glass microfibre membranes are also available mounted before the microporous filter membrane in the polypropylene housing. The glass pre-filter removes the larger particulates and prevents premature clogging of the filter.

Wide cross sectional area 3.55cm2
Maximum filtration volume >10ml
Maximum operating pressure 550 Kpa

13mm Diameter
Suitable for most applications
Filtration area of 0.95cm2
Maximum filtration volume 1 to 10ml Maximum operating pressure 750 Kpa Now available with ‘SlimTip’ (ST) outlet

4mm Diameter
Suitable for most applications Ideal for small samples <1ml Pore sizes of 0.20µm and 0.45µm
SlimTip Filters (ST)
13mm diameter syringe filters are now available with the new ‘SlimTip’ outlet for direct filling of microvials.
