Certified Ethanol Standards – % ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

Paragon New Product Launch Banner

Paragon Scientific's Certified Ethanol Standards are certified for % ABV (Alcohol by Volume) and are designed to be used for the calibration and/or verification of alcoholmeters or densitometers used to determine alcohol content, and for monitoring analytical perfromance of analyst or methodology.  Each Certified Reference Material (CRM) is dual certified to ISO 17025 and ISO 17034 under Paragon's UKAS accreditiation.

Importance of Measuring Alcohol Content:

It is a typical requirement for alcohol products to be labelled with an alcoholic strength or an alcohol content value, generally a percentage volume of alcohol content. Determining and measuring the
alcohol (ethanol) content is critical for quality control purposes and to ensure the declaration of alcohol content is correct for industry and tax measurements.

Accurate and precise measurements will be of critical importance to any distillery to ensure that their products meet the correct alcohol content. Regular calibration and / or verification of the
performance of alcoholmeters or densitometers using certified reference materials helps ensure that laboratories comply with quality control standards and produce reliable results with maximum accuracy.

These Ethanol CRMs are certified in strict accordance to both ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO/IEC 17034 as per our accreditation to the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS). Manufactured to a
premium quality, Paragon’s dual UKAS accreditation to ISO 17025 and ISO 17034 provides a level of confidence and assurance that international guidelines are followed in the production, labelling,
and assignment of property values to materials, including stability and homogeneity determinations.

Each CRM provides traceability of measurement to recognised national standards, and to units of measurement realised at the National Physics Laboratory (NPL), National Institute of Standards &
Technology (NIST) or other recognised national standards laboratories, so end users can be confident the results are metrologically traceable. The alcohol content is certified in accordance
with the UK Revenue & Customs Laboratory Alcohol Table.

Key Benefits:

  • Certified in strict accordance to ISO 17025 and ISO 17034 under our UKAS accreditation.
  • Highest level of accreditation guarantee, providing the most credible certified data available
    worldwide.

Paragon Scientific  are happy to announce that we have successfully completed the migration as soon as possible, to ensure customers have the confidence we demonstrate technical competence to the latest international requirements.

 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

"Our methods say we must use ISO Guide 34 products. Can we still buy from Paragon?"

Yes,  you  can.  Our  products  still  meet  or  exceed  the  requirements  of ISO Guide 34, and now meet the higher requirements of ISO/IEC 17034:2016.

"Some of your products still reference ISO Guide 34. Are they still ok to use?"

Yes, they are.  It will take a short time for us to update our calibration certificates, labels and website, but you can be assured that the products are still produced to the high standards you have come to expect from Paragon Scientific.

"Why should we use a producer accredited to ISO 17034?"

It demonstrates that the Reference Material Producer has been independently assessed and proven to have the technical competence to produce Reference Materials (RMs), including Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) to International recognised standard.

Halogenated carbazoles have recently been detected in soil and water samples, but their environmental effects and fate are unknown. Eighty-four soil samples obtained from a site with no recorded history of pollution were used to assess the persistence and dioxin-like toxicity of carbazole and chlorocarbazoles in soil under controlled conditions for 15 months. Soil samples were divided into two temperature conditions, 15 and 20 °C, both under fluctuating soil moisture conditions comprising 19 and 44 drying-rewetting cycles, respectively. This was characterized by natural water loss by evaporation and rewetting to -15 kPa. Accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) and cleanup were performed after incubation. Identification and quantification were done using high-resolution gas chromatogram/mass spectrometer (HRGC/MS), while dioxin-like toxicity was determined by ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) induction in H4IIA rat hepatoma cells assay and multidimensional quantitative structure-activity relationships (mQSAR) modelling. Carbazole, 3-chlorocarbazole and 3,6-dichlorocarbazole were detected including trichlorocarbazole not previously reported in soils. Carbazole and 3-chlorocarbazole showed significant dissipation at 15 °C but not at 20 °C incubating conditions indicating that low temperature could be suitable for dissipation of carbazole and chlorocarbazoles. 3,6-Dichlorocarbazole was resistant at both conditions. Trichlorocarbazole however exhibited a tendency to increase in concentration with time. 3-Chlorocarbazole, 3,6-dibromocarbazole and selected soil extracts exhibited EROD activity. Dioxin-like toxicity did not decrease significantly with time, whereas the sum chlorocarbazole toxic equivalence concentrations (∑TEQ) did not contribute significantly to the soil assay dioxin-like toxicity equivalent concentrations (TCDD-EQ). Carbazole and chlorocarbazoles are persistent with the latter also toxic in natural conditions.

Selecting the right Q-Fil Certified Syringe Filter

 • Choose the size of filter based on the volume of sample to be filtered

 • Choose the filters porosity based on the size of the potential particulates in the sample. It is important to be aware that the finer the porosity of the membrane the greater the pressure will be required to pass the sample through the filter. A sample containing large quantities of particulates is best filtered using a filter with a built-in glass fibre pre-filter

• Choose the type of membrane based on the solvent being filtered.

 Filter Sizes

All our filters have female Luer Lock inlets and are available in three diameters -

 25mm Diameter

Designed for large sample volumes or solvent filtration
Wide cross sectional area 3.55cm2
Maximum filtration volume >10ml
Maximum operating pressure 550 Kpa

 13mm Diameter

Suitable for most applications
Filtration area of 0.95cm2
Maximum filtration volume 1 to 10ml Maximum operating pressure 750 Kpa Now available with ‘SlimTip’ (ST) outlet

 4mm Diameter

Suitable for most applications Ideal for small samples <1ml Pore sizes of 0.20µm and 0.45µm
SlimTip Filters (ST)
13mm diameter syringe filters are now available with the new ‘SlimTip’ outlet for direct filling of microvials.

 Pore Sizes

Q-Fil Certified Syringe Filters are available in 0.20µm and 0.45µm pore sizes. The 0.20µm filters remove the smallest particulates whilst the 0.45µm filters are designed to remove particulates which would be detrimental to most analytical columns.

Pre-filters (page 6) have a glass microfibre membrane which is chemically inert and resists most solvents. Q-Fil glass microfibre pre-filters are recommended for removing large particulates from the sample and are ideal for dissolution tests.

Glass microfibre membranes are also available mounted before the microporous filter membrane in the polypropylene housing. The glass pre-filter removes the larger particulates and prevents premature clogging of the filter.

Native 3,6-Dichloro-9H-[13C12]carbazole
Native & Mass-Labelled Halogenated Carbazoles

Adult Polar Bear  Wellington Laboratories Logo

Halogenated carbazoles have recently been recognised as emerging environmental contaminants. Although there exact source has not been determined, both modern and historic sources (LED manufacturing and halogenated indigo dyes respectively) have been suggested. Since certain halogenated carbazole congeners can be lost during acid silica clean-up, it is very important that reference standards be used to monitor recoveries when processing samples.

Wellington Laboratories are the primary source of Standards for EPA Methods 23, 513, 1613, 1668, 8280, 8290, European Method EN-1948 and World Health/EPA Standards, C13 and Native Dioxins, Furans, PCBs and Brominated Diphenyl Ethers, Brominated Dioxins and Furans, Methylated PCDDs and PCDFs, Fluorinated Compounds and more.

PFAS and Other Toxic Forever Chemicals in Drinking Water

Images of Drinking Water

For over 30 years the European Union have worked tirelessly to protect the integrity of our drinking water.  EU officials have recently reached a provisional agreement to update the Union's 1998 Drinking Water Directive to tighten up the permissible limits allowed for both PFAS and several other drinking water contaminants, including bisphenol-A, microplastics, lead and chromium.   The at the time of writing the European Parliament and Council are still to formally approve the proposal.

European drinking water standards currently far exceed the standards set in the United States but this is a changing picture as state by state new instances of contaminants are emerging.  Currently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has only issued a nonenforceable health advisory of 70 ppt for PFOA, formerly used by DuPont to make Teflon, and PFOS, formerly an ingredient in 3M’s Scotchgard. Those compounds are no longer manufactured in the U.S., but they and other PFAS contaminate the drinking water for an estimated 110 million Americans. PFOA, PFOS and some other PFAS chemicals have been linked to cancer, thyroid disease, reproductive and immune system problems, and other health harms.

The european Parliament and the Council of the European Union have released new requirements for the analysis of per- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water intended for human consumption (5813/20).  This amendment to Council Directive 98/83/EC included perfluoroalkanesulfonates that are not commercially available.  In response to this Wellington Labroatories, Canada, is pleased to announce that its chemists have synthesized, purified, characterized and prepared accurate certified reference standards of the required substances: sodium perfluoro-1-undecanesulfonate (L-PFUds) and sodium perfluoro-1-tridecanesulfonate (L-PFTrDS).  Wellington Laboratories have also prepared a native solution/mixture (EU-5813-NSS) that contains all of the PFAS listed in the drinking water directive (5813/20) for your convenience.  This solution/mixture can be used in conjunction with two of Wellington's existing mass-labelled PFAS mixtures to easily prepare a calibration set for quantification.

Historically, Paragon Scientific has been accredited to ISO Guide 34 to prove our competency as a Reference Material Producer. A new standard to replace ISO Guide 34 was published in November 2016, ISO 17034, and it was internationally agreed that there will be a 3-year transitionary period to allow organisations accredited to ISO Guide 34 to move to the new standard.

Benefits of Using an Accredited ISO 17034:

  • Peace of mind. Our accreditation is proof of our technical competence as a Reference Material Producer, independently assessed by UKAS.
