Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) for Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) and Related Compounds

Tablets and Pills

Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) belongs to a class of drugs called analgesics (pain relievers) and antipyretics (fever reducers).  Since its approval in 1951, Paracetamol has become the most common drug ingredient in the USA, and is widely used throughout the world.

While it is generally considered to be safe medication when used as directed, it can be dangerous if taken at high, non-recommended doses.  Ovedose of Paracetamol can cause serious (possibly fatal) liver disease and is the most common cause of acute liver failure in adults.

The FDA has recently taken action to improve the safety of consumers when using Paracetamol (Acetaminophen).  The FDA issued a list of approximately 600 medications that contain the drug in a consumer update warning about the effects of doubling up on dosages of acetaminophen.  In addition, the FDA is recommending that health care professionals discontinue prescribing and dispensing prescription combination drug products that contain more than 325 milligrams (mg) of acetaminophen per tablet.

As awareness about pharmaceutical waste and the impact on the environment grows, acetaminophen has been identified as one of the detectable pharmaceuticals in drinking water.  Trace amounts (ppb or ppt) of Acetaminophen have been detected in drinking water supplies of several large metropolitan areas within the US.

Sigma-Aldrich offers Fluka brand Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) for Acetaminophen (Paracetamol) and several related compounds.  These CRMs are Secondary Pharmaceutical Reference Standards and are traceable to and qualified against the corresponding Pharmacopoeial standards.  A comprehensive Certificate of Analysis offers details of the methodology and results of the qualification.
