The Future Of Green Solvents Image

The future of solvents needs to be safe, environmentally conscious, and preserve natural resources. It must also meet the standards and reliance required for high-quality chemical research and production.

We've made considerable investments to develop optimal, safer alternatives to ensure that your research remains reliable, but becomes significantly more sustainable. Our next-generation solvents come in two categories, BioRenewable and Greener Substitutes, and include many alternatives that combine greater safety with a lower carbon impact, like our innovative Cyrene™ solvent.

The journey to find ecologically sound and safe solvents that perform equal to the current solvent options has led us to Cyrene™ (dihydrolevoglucosenone), a dipolar aprotic bicyclic chiral compound that is a potential replacement for dimethylformamide (DMF) and N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP).

Made from wood byproducts like twigs or sawdust, it is 98-100% completely renewable, with a carbon footprint approaching zero. Beyond its production impact, Cyrene™ is readily degradable in natural exposure conditions, decomposing 99% to carbon dioxide and water within 14 days, however under normal lab conditions, it will remain shelf stable. Cyrene™ was also designed for safety, showing no concerns as a reproductive hazard or mutagen, which is often the cited concern for DMF and NMP, making it safer to handle.

BioRenewable

BioRenewable solvents are sourced from renewable, sustainable biobased materials, significantly lowering their environmental impact. We verify that products are >50% biobased through either carbon testing the products, or tracing the biobased content at all steps of manufacturing.

Drop-in Replacements

These classic solvents are free of the many by-products of petroleum manufacturing, such as benzene, aldehydes, and ethers. They are also tested for renewable, biobased carbon (ASTM Standard D6866-16).

  • Acetone: drop-in greener replacement for petroleum-based acetone
  • 1-Butanol: drop-in greener replacement for petroleum-based 1-butanol
  • 2-Propanol: drop-in greener replacement for petroleum-based 2- Propanol
  • Glycerol: drop-in greener replacement for petroleum-based glycerol

BioRenewable Greener Substitutes

These BioRenewable solvents are not drop-in replacements, but are greener substitutes for more hazardous petroleum-based chemicals

  • Cyrene™: novel dipolar aprotic solvent substitute for NMP and DMF
  • Cyrene™ 2-MeTHF blend: blended solvent with reduced viscosity; greener substitute for NMP and DMF
  • Cyrene™ GVL blend: blended solvent with reduced viscosity; greener substitute for NMP and DMF
  • Dimethyl isosorbide (DMI): greener substitute for NMP or DMF
  • γ-Valerolactone (GVL): greener substitute for NMP or DMF
  • 2-Methyltetrahydrofuran: greener substitute for THF and DCM
  • Ethyl(-)-L-lactate: safer, more sustainable alternative to ethyl acetate and acetone

Other Greener Substitutes

These well-known solvents are replacements for more traditional solvents that have health or environmental concerns. They provide energy and cost savings in many ways, such as: cleaner solvent-water separations; less wastewater; easier distillation for solvent recovery; faster reaction times by allowing for higher temperatures due to a higher boiling point and lower volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

  • Cyclopentyl methyl ether (CPME): greener substitute for THF and DCM
  • Heptane: greener substitute for hexane
  • Dimethyl carbonate: greener substitute for methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and parachlorobenzotrifluoride

Greener Chromatography Solvents

These alternative solvents replace more hazardous and environmentally damaging solvents that are commonly used in chromatography. Chromatography is one of the most prevalent uses of solvents in the lab, and can be a major contributor to solvent waste.

  • Ethyl acetate/ethanol mixture: green substitute for DCM in flash chromatography purification, TLC and HPLC
  • Heptane: lower VOC alternative compared to the more traditional solvent hexane

Plastics Pollution, a Global Concern| Greyhound Chromatography

Sea Polluted with Plastic Image

Plastics Pollution is a global Concern

As the world wakes up to our environmental crisis it is important to note that every person living on our planet bears a responsibility for the world we have to live in.  Resources are limited and their supply is threatened by overuse and careless disregard for how resources are produced and sustained.  Whether it be our soil, air or water all are equally valuable is the quest to make our resources last and sustain our populations.  Global contamination of our seas and oceans is only the tip of the iceberg. Today's research scientists bear an enormous responsibility as they  endeavour to reduce and repair the impact we are having on our planet.

Greyhound Chromatography supplies the world's leading scientists with analytical reference standards and materials to ensure testing of contaminants in our environment to the highest level.

Denmark just became the first country to ban PFAS from food packaging

Wellington Laboratories Logo Image

Denmark will be the first country to ban PFAS Chemicals, which have been linked to cancer, elevated cholesterol and decreased fertility, from food packaging, starting next year.

PFAS substances, sometimes called "forever chemicals" because they don't break down in the environment, are used to repel grease and water in packaging for fatty and moist foods such as burgers and cakes.

What are PFAS chemicals, and what are they doing to our health?

"I do not want to accept the risk of harmful fluorinated substances (PFAS) migrating from the packaging and into our food. These substances represent such a health problem that we can no longer wait for the EU," Denmark's Food Minister Mogens Jensen said in a statement Monday.

PFAS chemicals are a family of potentially thousands of synthetic chemicals that are extremely persistent in the environment and in our bodies. PFAS is short for perfluoroalky and polyfluoroalkyl substances, and includes chemicals known as PFOS, PFOA and GenX.

They are all identified by signature elemental bonds of fluorine and carbon, which are extremely strong and what make it so difficult for these chemicals to disintegrate in the environment or in our bodies.

Under Denmark's new regulation, baking paper and microwave popcorn bags, for example, will be required to be manufactured without any PFAS.

"We congratulate Denmark on leading the way for healthier food and hope this will encourage similar action across the EU, the US and worldwide," said Arlene Blum of the Green Science Policy Institute and the Department of Chemistry at University of California, Berkeley.

FDA confirms PFAS chemicals are in the US food supply

"Given the potential for harm, we must ask if the convenience of water and grease resistance is worth risking our health," Blum said.

PFAS chemicals have been manufactured since the 1940s and can be found in Teflon nonstick products, stains and water repellants, paints, cleaning products, food packaging and firefighting foams.

These chemicals can easily migrate into the air, dust, food, soil and water. People can also be exposed to them through food packaging and industrial exposure.

A growing body of science has found that there are potential adverse health impacts associated with PFAS exposure, including liver damage, thyroid disease, decreased fertility, high cholesterol, obesity, hormone suppression and cancer.

In a statement, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration said that the substances were very difficult to break down in the environment, and some of them accumulate in humans and animals.

The ban covers the use of PFAS compounds in food contact materials of cardboard and paper. The Danish government said it would continue to be possible to use recycled paper and paper for food packaging, but said PFAS compounds must be separated from the food with a barrier which ensures that they don't migrate into the food.

PFOS and PFOA are the two most-studied PFAS chemicals and have been identified as contaminants of emerging concern by the US Environmental Protection Agency.

PFOS was voluntarily phased out of production in the United States by 3M, the main manufacturer, starting in 2000. In 2006, PFOA began to be phased out as well. PFOA and PFOS are no longer manufactured or imported in the United States, but similar "replacement chemicals for PFOA and PFOS such as GenX, may be just as persistent," Susan M. Pinney, a professor in the Department of Environmental Health at the University of Cincinnati.

The European Food Safety Agency said it is reassessing the risks PFAS pose to human health and will report on its findings in the near future.

Wellington Laboratories offer a wide range of Certified Reference Standards for Testing and Analysis of Perfluorinated Compounds.

 Perfluorinated Compounds (PFCs)

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are an emerging class of environmental contaminants. Their unique properties create a host of analytical challenges that require the use of native and mass-labelled standards for the generation of accurate data.

The most notable PFAS include PFOS (perfluorooctanesulfonate) and PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) and Wellington currently offers multiple mass-labelled standards for these compounds to meet your analytical needs. In fact, Wellington offers a large selection of native and mass-labelled per- and poly-fluorinated compounds, including:

Pore Sizes

Q-Fil Certified Syringe Filters are available in 0.20µm and 0.45µm pore sizes. The 0.20µm filters remove the smallest particulates whilst the 0.45µm filters are designed to remove particulates which would be detrimental to most analytical columns.

Pre-filters (page 6) have a glass microfibre membrane which is chemically inert and resists most solvents. Q-Fil glass microfibre pre-filters are recommended for removing large particulates from the sample and are ideal for dissolution tests.

Glass microfibre membranes are also available mounted before the microporous filter membrane in the polypropylene housing. The glass pre-filter removes the larger particulates and prevents premature clogging of the filter.

HPLC Solvent Safety Caps

          AIT Logo

AIT France presents its own Smart Caps range to suit your HPLC system at best. This range offers you two solutions: - Smart Healthy Caps-Smart Waste Caps

Smart Healthy caps are manufactured in response to modern laboratory safety regulations.

They are made of inert materials resistant to chemicals.

The use of a one-way air check valve allows for low cost safe and secure solvent extraction in your laboratory.

• No solvent evaporation
• Keep your concentration accurate for several days
• No mobile phase external contamination

AIT France offers a diversified range of activated charcoal cartridge for the emission of eluent and solvent vapours; by special charcoal impregnation, the cartridges become an excellent barrier against concentrated acids or bases.

A Smart Waste Cap forms an airtight cap, drilled with a variable number of holes to host effluents tubes outgoing from the HPLC system.

The main piece is a cartridge filled with activated charcoal attached to the cap. This filter allows the absorption of 98% of the solvent's vapours released by the solvent's can.

There are many size and configuration options available to suit your personal needs. Please refer to the catalogue for full products details.

If you have any questions regarding AIT products, please do not hesitate to contact us at sales@greyhoundchrom.com

Colour coded Syringe Filters

Why filter your samples for HPLC?

• To protect the HPLC column, the column inlet frits and capillary columns against blockage (plugging) caused by particulate matter in the sample
• To protect injection valves from damage caused by scratching and wear of the valves internal components, caused by harmful particulate matter in the unfiltered sample, thereby reducing instrument downtime.

About our Quality Control procedures

• Every batch of filters is tested by an independent laboratory to ISO 17025 quality procedures

• Every individual Q-Fil Certified Syringe Filter is visually inspected to ensure it meets our manufacturing and quality control specifications
• Samples of all our syringe filters and their respective raw technical data are stored for a period of 5 years from the date of manufacture for future reference
• Each batch of filters is tested prior to release for
- External Dimensions
- Bubble Point
- Burst Pressure
- Filter Integrity
- Water Flow Rate
- UV Extractables and compliance with all technical procedures

Why use Greyhound Q-Fil Certified Syringe Filters?

• Q-Fil Certified Syringe Filters are manufactured in compliance with ISO 9001:2000 quality procedures

• Every box is supplied with a Certificate of Analysis and Conformance to guarantee its batch to batch quality and performance
• The unique encapsulating process developed for these filters, forces the sample to pass only through the membrane, thus avoiding the possibility of leaks or contamination
• Available in the most popular sizes, porosities and membrane types
• Excellent resistance to all routinely used HPLC solvents
• Filter housings are manufactured from high density medical grade polypropylene
• Extremely low level of extractables for highly sensitive work
• Luer connections fully comply with ISO 594-1
• Filters are available with standard and ‘SlimTip’ sized outlets

Selecting the right Q-Fil Certified Syringe Filter

• Choose the size of filter based on the volume of sample to be filtered

• Choose the filters porosity based on the size of the potential particulates in the sample. It is important to be aware that the finer the porosity of the membrane the greater the pressure will be required to pass the sample through the filter. A sample containing large quantities of particulates is best filtered using a filter with a built-in glass fibre pre-filter
• Choose the type of membrane based on the solvent being filtered.
